The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) section of the Australian Consulate-General Guangzhou has non-ongoing vacancies to fill the following several positions on a 12-month contract.

Visa Officer

Applications are invited from Chinese Nationals. The successful applicants are required to register with the Service Office of Foreign Establishments, Guangdong Province (if not already) prior to commencing employment. 

Salary for the positions will commence at RMB 9,026 (LE4) per month.

Please note the positions are initially for a period of 12 months only. The successful applicants may be offered a further 12 month contract and a subsequent permanent contract.

• contact details of two work-related referees.

Referees should be from two different employers, where possible. Referees must also have been supervisors or managers, not peers. When providing referee details, please indicate whether the referee can speak fluent English, and ensure that:

Duty Statement

The position is responsible for assessing straightforward to moderately complex visa applications for temporary entry to Australia.

The key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• under general direction, apply an understanding of relevant legislation, policies and procedures to assess and decide temporary entry visa applications, within service standards in a pressured environment, escalating sensitive and more complex cases as necessary
• prepare client correspondence for temporary entry visa applicants in a timely manner
• undertake thorough investigations to assess the bona fides of an application including interviews with clients; verification checks on documents; initiation of health checks
• manage client queries by phone, email and in person
• conduct interpretation and document translation as required
• provide mentoring and on-the-job training to other staff as required
• undertake general administrative support for the Temporary Entry Unit as required


Selection Criteria

1. Good written and oral English language skills and fluency in Mandarin are required. Sound ability as an interpreter and translator between these languages. Fluency in Cantonese is highly desirable
2. Ability to make assessments and decisions based on legal requirements incorporating initiative and sound judgement
3. Ability to work independently and under direction. Maintain high work standards, high degree of integrity and meet deadlines
4. Sound communication and interpersonal skills and capacity to respond professionally and sensitively to clients while maintaining a high level of client service
5. Proficiency with PC based software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel and the capacity to work with DIBP computer systems
6. Ability to maintain productive working relationships with colleagues from a diverse range of backgrounds
